Through case studies, presentations, group discussion and online learning this course will provide attendees with the introductory skills to incorporate STI and BBV screening within their workplace. Including sessions on why to screen for STIs and BBVs, stigma and discrimination, how to bring up the topic with clients, specimen collection and contact tracing. This course will be particularly relevant for nurses and midwives working in alcohol and other drugs, mental health, schools, general practice, justice health and refugee health.

This intermediate level course is designed for nurses and midwives who are already providing care for patients who have or are at risk of BBVs and STIs and want to build on their existing knowledge . This course is particularly relevant for nurses working in, youth health, HIV, women’s health, midwifery and sexual health. Through case studies, presentations, group discussion and online learning modules the course will explore the nurses role in STI and BBV prevention, care and management. Sessions include clinical presentation and management of STIs, advanced sexual health communication, stigma and discrimination, contact tracing, HIV and viral hepatitis overview and prevention.

The Deadly Sex Congress is an annual forum for Queensland Indigenous Sexual Health Workers designed to update knowledge in the areas of blood borne viruses and sexual health, build workforce capacity and share community stories. It was first held in 2003 and has alternated locations between Cairns and the Gold Coast/Brisbane area. The Deadly Sex Congress is organised by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sexual Health Workers for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers through an Organising Committee Structure.

Along with the annual Deadly Sex Congress, a number of Deadly Sex Updates designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and community workers are coordinated in various locations throughout Queensland each year. The content for the updates is determined through consultation with local health workers and is focused on BBV/STI workforce development needs and interests for the specific region. Past topics have included updates on STIs, HIV, viral hepatitis, contact tracing, community organisation presentations, cervical screening, and sessions on talking about sexual health and breaking down shame and stigma.

This update will provide the latest information on sexual history taking, testing, diagnosis and management of common STIs and syndromes. Current STI trends, local issues and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for th e prevention of HIV will also be covered

This course has been developed to provide primary health care nurses with an understanding of the most common sexually transmissible infections (STIs) - chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, hepatitis A and blood borne viruses (BBVs) - hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.

ASHM is experienced in the delivery of webinars and provides opportunities for health professionals to access ASHM and partner organisation training remotely. Existing webinars cover clinical skill development, health promotion and research dissemination. Participants can register and ‘attend’ online to enable them to interact with presenters or can access recordings at any time for convenience.
